THE NEWS JOURNAL MONDAY, FEB. 21, 1994 OBITUARIES Volunteer Helen S. Flaherty, 84 WILMINGTON Longtime community volunteer and former nurse Helen Stiver Flaherty, of Deerhurst near Fairfax, died Friday in St. Francis Hospital. She was 84.

Mrs. Flaherty whose four children were two pairs of twins was president of Delaware State Hospital Auxiliary. She chaired the Children's Concerts Committee of Wilmington Symphony Orchestra and Mental Health Committee of Women's Auxiliary, New Castle County Medical Association and was a member and membership chairwoman of the Mental Health Association of Delaware board of directors. Her other volunteer work included being a hostess for Blood Bank of Delaware Inc. and a member of The Junior Board of St.

Francis Hospital. In the late 1950s, she was a member of a group that founded St. Edmond's Academy because there was no Catholic private boys school in the area for boys. DONALD R. ABBOTT, 72, of Christiana Green, Christiana, died Sunday of a heart attack at home.

Mr. Abbott was a driver's license examiner with the state Department of Motor Vehicles, retiring in 1990. Earlier, he worked at the Wilmington yards of PennsylVania Railroad in the 1950s. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in First Army Combat Engineers and participated in the Invasion of Normandy with the Third Army. He received a Presidential Unit Citation and Purple Heart Five Star Arrow.

He was a life member of Christiana Fire Company and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Gen. W.W. Atterbury Post 3420, Wilmington, of which he was past commander. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Cola M. "Pat" Abbott; three stepsons, Ronald O.

Jochen of Wilmington, Edwin Jochen of Newark and David J. Jochen of New Castle; a stepdaughter, Darlene J. Leary of Newark; a brother, Eugene Abbott of Wilmington; a sister, Marjorie Swan of Farmington, 14 stepgrandchildren and four stepgreatgrandchildren. BAYARD, 78, of Electra Arms Apartments, Wil- mington, died cancer in Christiana Hospital near Stan- 1 ton. Mr. Bayard worked for Congo Funeral Home and Congo Shuttle Service, both in Wilmington, for the past few years. Earlier, he worked in the funeral MR. BAYARD home business MR.

BAYARD in Grand Rapids, Mich. In Wilmington, he was a member of the Usher Board and United Methodist Men at EzionMount Carmel United Methodist Church and was treasurer of the Hi Council at Electra Arms Apartments. He was a member of Elks Pride of Delaware Lodge 349, Newark, and Coronet's Diamond State Bridge and Jut Pal Pinochle clubs. In Grand Rapids, he was an Elks grand district deputy and esteemed leading knight and organized volunteers to serve meals to senior citizens. Raised in the East Side of Wilmington, he attended Howard High School.

CONGO FUNERAL HOME. Raised in Punxsutawney, she earned a nursing degree from Graduate Hospital of University of Pennsylvania in 1933 and then worked there as a nurse. She moved to Delaware City in 1952 when her husband, Dr. James A. Flaherty, became director of Governor Bacon Health Center there.

She moved to 1105 N. Franklin Wilmington, in 1956 and to Deerhurst in 1976. Her husband died in 1982. She is survived four children, twins James A. Jr.

of Chestnut Hill, and John E. of Newark, and twins Deborah S. of Wilmington and Charles J. of Philadelphia; a sister, Marjorie L. Stiver of Newark; and three grandsons.

A service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in First Alliance Church, Loveville and Graves roads, Hockessin, with burial in Lower Brandywine Cemetery, Greenville. KUMUDINIBAI JATAR BORGAONKAR, 85, of Pune, India, who planned to move to Delaware, died Tuesday at home.

Mrs. Borgaonkar, who lived most of her life in Hyderabad, India, had lived with her son, Digamber, in Baltimore and with a daughter in Dallas in the 1970s. She planned to return from India in 1983 to live with her son, who moved to Brandywine Forge in Brandywine Hundred, when he became director of the Cytogenetics Laboratory at Medical Center of Delaware. But after breaking her hip, she remained in India. Her husband, Shankarrao Borgaonkar, died in 1971.

In addition to her son, she is survived by three daughters, Pramila Desai of Buffalo, N.Y., Saral Dudhbhate of Pune, and Leela Ghate of Dallas, 11 grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren. BRADY, 76, of Luther Ridge Personal Care Center, Pottsville, died Thursday of respiratory failure in Good Samaritan Medical Center, Pottsville.

Mr. Brady was a salesman for Montgomery Ward in Phoenix for 12 years, retiring in 1979. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 129, Pottsville, of which he was past commander and past district commander. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Pottsville.

He is survived by his wife, Pearl L. Chattin Brady; a son, Robert L. of Newark, two daughters; two stepchildren; a sister, Margaret V. Brady of Kennett Square; seven grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren. A service will be at 11 a.m.

at Prices Corner. He retired in 1990 after 28 years. His daughter and son now run the business. He was born in Philadelphia and moved to Delaware in 1967. He was a member of a Philadelphia Masonic Lodge, Delaware Motor Transport Association and New Castle County Chamber of Commerce.

Raised in New Castle, Mr. McClain moved to Cecil County more than 15 years ago. She is survived by six sons, Howard, William Jerry, Joseph, Kirk and Jerome, eight daughters, Vernell Stroman, Ethel Briscoe, Betty Young, Ruth Nichols, Marilyn Selby, Myrtle Collins, Brenda Selby and Patricia Selby, all of Wilmington; a brother, Fred Stroman of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 45 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. SNOW, 73, of Mannington Township, N.J., died Fri- day of kidney failure in Christiana Hospital near Stanton, where she was a heart and lung patient. Mrs. Snow, a homemaker, was raised in Penns Grove and moved to Mannington Township 45 years ago. Her husband, Harvey J. Snow died in 1983.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma M. Stevens of North East, a daughter, Debra J. Handling of Wilmington, with whom he lived; two brothers, Tom of Bluefield, W.Va., and Owen of New Jersey; two sisters, Lucille Lauterbach of Columbus, and Bonnie Odom of Newport News, his stepmother, Myrtle Stevens of Danville, a stepsister, Lois Smith of Greensboro, N.C.; and two grandchildren. Mr. Tiley founded W.J. Tiley Sons Construction Elkton, in 1980. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Elkton. He attended Salesianum School, Wilmington, and Bohemia Manor High School.

He is survived by two sons, Robert J. of Calvert and Joseph J. of Chesapeake City; three daughters, Barbara M. Tiley of Virginia Beach, Theresa A. Smith of Elkton and Jeniffer A.

Tiley of Churchville; his father, Warren Elkton; a brother, Rich of Middletown, a sister, Irma "Jeannie" Chester of Elkton, and two grandchildren. WARREN J. TILEY, 47, of 10 Maryland Earleville, in Brandywine Hospital. Ms. Williams was a home aide in the Coatesville area for children with disabilities. She was a member of New Hope Glad Tidings Church of God, Coatesville.

Raised at 432 E. Ninth Wilmington, she attended Howard High School before moving to Coatesville in 1973.
