WotLK Disc pve guide (2024)

Hello everyone,

I am going to try and make a comprehensive guide for Discipline priests, which will cover almost every aspect of the specialization in PvE so it might be a bit too long to read. For that purpose I am going to separate it into various sections in order to be easier to find what you need in specific.

I. Introduction

The only class on WoW that has two healing specializations is the priest. Discipline is a unique way of healing, based on absorbing and/or mitigating damage taken by the whole group.

Absorbing damage is the power of Discipline (instead of relying on direct heals only). That way you can prevent many mistakes people usually make and save the raid from great amounts of damage and/or wipe. In order to properly monitor your Healing & Absorbs, you’d need to use specific addons, which are covered in section VIII. Macros and Addons.

Each of the following sections of the guide can be read separately, but combined it gives you a really good (if not a whole) idea of what Discipline is and how it is played on Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK).

Here are some of the abbreviations used in the guide:
PoM: Prayer of Mending
PoH: Prayer of Healing
PWS: Power Word: Shield
BT: Borrowed Time (talent, Discipline tree)
DH: Divine Hymn
FH: Flash Heal
BH: Binding Heal
GH: Greater Heal
PI: Power Infustion
PS: Pain Suppression
MH: Main Haind
OH: Off Hand

II. Talents and Glyphs

1. Talents and Glyphs explained

First off, I am going to start with a short explanation what talents actually do because sometimes the tooltip is not enough to understand that.

Tier 1 Discipline Talents

Unbreakable Will - Reduces the duration of Stun, Fear, and Silence effects done to you.
Note: This is a PvP only talent and its uses in PvE are quite limited so it should not be used there.

Twin Disciplines – Increases the damage and healing done by your instant spells.
Note: Apart from spells like PoM, Renew and Holy Nova, this improves your PWS healing, which makes it mandatory.

Tier 2 Discipline Talents

Silent Resolve – Threat reduction and protection against dispels.
Note: This is again a strictly PvP talent. While there are some cases where you can pull threat for a moment while dealing with trash in dungeons or raids, you can never pull threat as a healer during boss encounters.

Improved Inner Fire – Increases the effect of Inner Fire and its total amount of charges.
Note: Inner Fire is a self buff which gives you your most important stat – spell power. So any increase of this effect will boost your healing. Apart from that, have in mind that during Lord Marrowgar’s Bone Storm you lose stacks when you are not shielded. Do not forget to refresh the stacks if they deplete.

Improved Power Word: Fortitude – Increases the effect of your Fortitude buffs and increases your total Stamina.
Note: A very useful talent for boosting your personal and the whole raid’s survivability.

Martyrdom – decreases pushback when critically hit.
Note: A strictly PvP talent with no use in PvE.

Tier 3 Discipline Talents

Meditation – Increases your mana regeneration while casting.
Note: This is extremely important as a healer and helps in healing intensive fights like BQL and Lady Deathwhisper.

Inner Focus – Increases the critical strike chance of your next spell by 25% and reduces its mana cost by 100%.
Note: As a healer the only spell which is worth combining this talent with is Divine Hymn, as it is very mana costly and if it crits, the heals save the raid from wiping in most cases. Other than that, you can combine it with Greater Heal in cases where the tank(s) need(s) to be saved.

Improved Power Word: Shield – Increases the damage absorbed by your PWS.
Note: As PWS is your primary spell, this talent is mandatory.

Tier 4 Discipline Talents

Absolution – Reduces the mana cost of your Dispel Magic, Cure Disease, Abolish Disease and Mass Dispel.
Note: This talent has situational uses and will be explained further in the next sections. Its most important use is for priests who are with low mana regeneration and need to preserve mana. Fights where this talent saves you a lot of mana are Lady Deathwhisper (where you have to Mass Dispel the Frostbolt slow so that people can run away from the Vile Shades); Blood Queen Lana’thel (where you have to Mass Dispel fear from the raid so that people do not get into the Swarming Shadows) and Faction Champions in To(G)C (where you have to dispel buffs from the Champions and debuffs from the raid).

Mental Agility – Reduces the mana cost of your instant cast spells.
Note: Since Discipline priests operate mainly with instant spells, this talent is mandatory.

Improved Mana Burn – Reduces the cast time of your Mana Burn.
Note: A strictly PvP talent with no use in PvE.

Tier 5 Discipline Talents

Reflective Shield – Causes a % of your damage absorbed by your PWS to reflect back at the attacker.
Note: A talent which has use only in PvP. Also, the talent affects only the shield cast on YOURSELF, which makes it quite useless! A very often mistake is when people think this effect triggers on any shield you cast, which is NOT the case!

Mental Strength – Increases your total Intellect.
Note: Since Intellect increases your crit chance (which is a stat with top priority for Discipline) and your total mana (which is the main source of mana replenishment through the Rapture talent), this talent is mandatory.

Soul Warding – Reduces the cooldown and mana cost of your PWS.
Note: Since PWS is your main spell, this talent is mandatory.

Tier 6 Discipline Talents

Focused Power – Increases damage and healing done by your spells and reduces the cast time of your Mass Dispel.
Note: A great boost to your healing and your Mass Dispel.

Enlightenment – Increases your total Spirit and spell haste.
Note: Because of this talent, Spirit is slightly increased but MP5 is still better for combat (while casting) mana regen. Also, this talent is mandatory in getting your haste cap so that you can focus on crit from items and gems.

Tier 7 Discipline Talents

Focused Will – Increases your spell crit chance.
Note: Since crit is important for Discipline priests, this talent is mandatory.

Power Infusion (PI) – Infuses the target, increasing spell casting speed by 20% and reducing mana cost of all spells by 20% for 15 seconds.
Note: This spell must be cast on the top Caster DPS in the raid group to boost raid DPS. However, if you have low gear and problems with mana, you can cast it on yourself because of the mana reduction effect, until you gear up more.

Improved Flash Heal – Reduces the mana cost of your Flash Heal and increases its crit chance on targets at or below 50% health.
Note: This talent has situational uses and is suitable only for dungeons and 10-mans.

Tier 8 Discipline Talents

Renewed Hope – Increases the crit chance of some of your healing spells on targets with the Weakened Soul debuff (those who have been shielded) and reduces all damage taken by the raid by 3% when you use your PWS.
Note: The crit chance can be useful only in dungeons and 10-mans, while in 25-mans only Penance will benefit from it. The 3% damage reduction is extremely important, especially in Heroic. This damage reduction DOES NOT STACK with Paladin Blessing of Sanctuary.

Rapture – When your PWS is completely absorbed or dispelled, you gain % of your total mana back and you energize the shielded target with mana, rage, energy or runic power. This effect has a 12-second cooldown.
Note: It is extremely important to know how this talent works since it is the main source of mana for you and it energizes the raid with mana/rage/energy/runic power. If Rapture is not on cooldown and if multiple shields break at the same moment, you get % mana back, multiplied by the number of shields which were completely absorbed. For example, at Lady Deathwhisper’s Frostvolley, you can shield multiple targets (except the tanks), whose shields will get absorbed at the same moment which will give you a lot of mana. At Lich King’s Infest you can shield the raid (except the tanks and the DPS who usually pull ghouls in phase 1; or except the tanks only in phase 2) and whenever Infest hits, you get to full mana.

Aspiration – Reduces the cooldown of your Inner Focus, Power Infusion, Pain Suppression and Penance.
Note: This talent boosts all your important spells so it is mandatory.

Tier 9 Discipline Talents

Divine Aegis – All critical heals create an additional shield on the target, which absorbs % of the critical amount healed. Lasts 12 seconds and can stack up.
Note: In all cases, this talent is your first or second most powerful healing source. Also, have in mind that even the critical healing from Glyph of PWS triggers the talent.

Pain Suppression (PS) – Reduces all damage taken from the target by 40% for 8 seconds (the other effects are not important here).
Note: This is your ultimate cooldown for survivability. In most of the cases it will be used on tanks but also it can be used on other players who may die. Use it carefully, though, as it has a fairly long cooldown.

Grace – This is a stackable effect on only 1 target at a time, which increases all healing done ONLY BY YOU on that target. The effect is only triggered by Flash Heal, Greater Heal and Penance.
Note: This talent has situational uses and is more suitable for dungeons and 10-mans.

Tier 10 Discipline Talents

Borrowed Time (BT) – Increases your spell haste by a certain % for the next spell after you cast PWS and increases the amount absorbed by PWS by % of your spell power.
Note: That talent is absolutely mandatory because it boosts your main spell and it allows you to reach the haste cap. PENANCE DOES NOT CONSUME THIS EFFECT.

Tier 11 Discipline Talents

Penance – A channeled heal which heals the target for 3 ticks of healing.
Note: This is mainly used on tanks because 1 Penance provides you with the 3 stacks of Grace needed to boost your tank healing. In other cases it serves as an emergency heal for anyone who is on low health.

Tier 1 Holy Talents

Healing Focus – Reduces the pushback while casting any healing spell.
Note: Even though Disc priests operate mainly with instant spells, some of the important spells like Divine Hymn and Penance benefit from this talent. Other spells include Flash Heal and Greater Heal which have occasional usage.

Improved Renew – Increases the amount healed by your Renew spell.
Note: As a Discipline priest you will use Renew rarely/never so that talent is useless in PvE.

Holy Specialization – Increases the critical chance of your Holy spells.
Note: It is important to note that this talent affects the spells from the Discipline tab of your spellbook as well, i.e. Penance and PWS. That is why this talent is mandatory.

Tier 2 Holy Talents

Spell Warding – reduces all spell damage taken.
Note: In Heroic content this can be rather useful.

Divine Fury – Reduces the cast time of Smite, Holy Fire, Heal and Greater Heal.
Note: This is a talent more suitable for Holy. For Discipline you’ll rarely benefit from it.

Tier 3 Holy Talents

Desperate Prayer – Instantly heals you. 2 mins cd.
Note: A life-saver in most of the encounters of ICC Heroic. I strongly recommend it since it costs only 1 point.

Inspiration – Each time you critically heal with BH/FH/GH/Circle of Healing/PoM/PoH/Penance your target takes 10% less physical damage.
Note: This is solely a tank booster in PvE. Even though there will most probably be a Holy priest with that talent who will also place it, you will trigger it easily with your Penance.

Glyphs

The two MANDATORY major glyphs are:
- Glyph of Penance, which reduces the cooldown by 2 secs.
- Glyph of Power Word: Shiled, which heals your shielded target with 20% of the total absorb of the shield. This heal CAN crit and triggers Divine Aegis.

The situational major glyphs:
- Glyph of Mass Dispel, which reduces its mana cost by 35%.
- Glyph of Holy Nova, which increases damage and healing by Holy Nova by 20%.
- Glyph of Flash Heal, which reduces FH mana cost by 10%.
- Glyph of PoH, which leaves a HoT after PoH. Use it only if you prefer PoH as an emergency party-wide heal at specific situations.

The MANDATORY minor glyphs are:
- Glyph of Levitate, which removes the reagent requirement for Levitate.
- Glyph of Fortitude, which reduces the mana cost of your Fortitude buffs by 50% (this is really helpful when you have to rebuff during combat).
- Glyph of Shadow Protection, which increases the duration of your Shadow Protection buffs by 10 minutes.

2. Talents and Glyphs for dungeons and 10-mans

I’d recommend this 57/14/0 build, which can be seen here: http://wotlk.openwow...uhhVRIsffRtbezc
3. Talents and Glyphs for 25-mans

I’d recommend this 55/16/0 build, which can be seen here: http://wotlk.openwow...uuhVRIoffRtbEzc
Glyphs are:
- major: Penance; PWS; Holy Nova;
- minor: Levitate; Fortitude; Shadow Protection.

Note: If you suffer from mana problems because of Mass Dispel, you can use Glyph of Mass Dispel instead of Glyph of Holy Nova AND/OR transfer 2 points from Spell Warding to Absolution.

Glyph of Holy Nova is really useful at fights like Lich King Hc (Frostmourne phase) and Anub’arak (last phase) and in dungeons where the whole party is taking damage and you need fast healing, since you don’t have Improved Flash Heal from talents and don’t have it glyphed.
III. Statistic Priority

The short version is Spell Power>Haste Cap>Crit>Intellect>MP5>=Spirit

Note: You never gem the following stats – Haste. I will cover some of the stats in the next section IV. Gems and Enchants. Here I will focus on the haste cap for Discipline.

Haste cap for a Discipline priests is the haste needed so that the Global Cooldown (GCD) of your PWS is 1 second and you can shield as many people as you can for a minimum amount of time. You should never be under haste cap – it will be the same as a dps under hit cap.

As it was mentioned so far, there are two mandatory talents which give you haste boost: 6% from Enlightenment and 25% from Borrowed Time. If you have only those two, your haste cap is 434 haste rating or 13.208% haste.

In raids you can get two other haste boosting buffs: 5% from Wrath of Air Totem (Shaman), plus 3% from Swift Retribution (Retribution Paladin)/Moonkin Aura (Balance Druid).
Note: Have in mind that in dungeons and 10-mans it depends on your preferences whether to stack haste beyond the cap or not because you will be using Flash Heal as well. This is covered in section V. Rotation, Cooldowns, and Abilities.

As for Spirit vs. MP5, we mentioned in section II. Talents and Glyphs that Spirit is slightly incresed by a talent, but MP5 provides more combat (while casting) mana regeneration, while Spirit provides more non-combat regen (while not casting). You should never gem Spirit or MP5 unless it is one blue gem to activate the meta socket.
IV. Gems and Enchants

1. Gems

First, I will start with the gemming for end-game gear (Heroic content):

Meta gem – Option 1: Ember Skyflare Diamond (25 Spell Power and 2% Intellect) - this meta increases your healing output but gives you mana regen only through a minimum Intellect boost.
– Option 2: Insightful Earthsiege Diamond (21 Intellect and chance to restore mana on spellcast) - this meta gives you mana regen but no healing output. Also, the shorter the boss fight is, the more uesless this meta gets. I'd recommend it only for lower gear.

Red sockets – Runed Cardinal Ruby (23 Spell Power)

Yellow sockets – wherever you have a combination of ONLY Red and Yellow sockets and the socket bonus is 7 or 9 spell power, you gem Luminous Ametrine (12 Spell Power + 10 Intellect). In ALL other cases you gem Runed Cardinal Ruby in yellow sockets.
Note: With lower gear you would have no/too low crit, so apart from gemming Luminous Ametrine (12 Spell Power + 10 Intellect), you can also gem for Potent Ametrine (12 Spell Power + 10 Crit) in order to get more procs of Divine Aegis.

Blue sockets – you have to have only 1 blue gem (Royal Dreadstone 12 Spell Power + 5 MP5 (for more combat mana regen) OR Purified Dreadstone 12 Spell Power + 10 Spirit (for more non-combat mana regen)) out of all the blue sockets (to activate the meta gem, ONLY if you're using Insightful Earthsiege Diamond). You have to EITHER combine it with a Red Socket, where the socket bonus is 7 or 9 spell power OR put it in a Blue+Meta combination where the socket bonus is at least 7 spell power. In all other blue sockets you gem Runed Cardinal Ruby.

2. Enchants

Head – Arcanum of Burning Mysteries (30 Spell Power + 20 Crit Rating); source Archmage Alvareaux, requires Kirin Tor reputation.

Shoulder – Greater Inscription of the Storm (24 Spell Power + 15 Crit Rating); source Lillehoff, requires The Sons of Hodir reputation.
Note: If you have Exalted reputation with Sons of Hodir on any of your characters, you can send it to any character on the same account, without having to do the quest chain on all characters from this account!

Back – Lightweave Embroidery (295 Spell Power proc); source Tailoring

Chest – Enchant Chest – Powerful Stats (10 All Stats); source Enchanting

Wrist – Enchant Bracers – Superior Spellpower (30 Spell Power); source Enchanting

Hands – Enchant Gloves – Exceptional Spellpower (28 Spell Power); source Enchanting

Waist – Eternal Belt Buckle (1 extra socket); source Blacksmithing

Legs – Sanctified Spellthread/Brilliant Spellthread (50 Spell Power + 20 Spirit); source Tailoring

Feet – Enchant Boots – Tuskarr’s Vitality (15 Stamina + Minor Speed Increase); source Enchanting

One-Handed Weapon – 63 Spell Power; source Enchanting

Two-Handed Weapon – 81 Spell Power; source Enchanting

I will cover further info about Gems and Enchants in VII. Professions and Consumables.

V. Rotation, Cooldowns, and Abilities

Before I go into details, there are several major rules you always have to remember as a Discipline priest:
- buff your group with the three buffs you can provide: Fortitude, Spirit and Shadow Protection and rebuff if someone gets combat ressed;
- keep Inner Fire up and use Fear Ward whenever it is necessary;
- dispel debuffs from your group (unless tactics require from you not to dispel immediately) using Dispel Magic/Mass Dispel/Abolish Disease;
- if you pull threat, just use Fade and continue healing;
- in cases of emergencies use Pain Suppression (mostly on tanks) AND/OR Inner Focus+Divine Hymn AND/OR Desperate Prayer but be careful because they have high cooldowns;
- if you are really low on mana and cannot return it through Rapture, cast Shadowfiend+Hymn of Hope for maximum efficiency;
- cast PI on the highest DPS caster at boss encounters or on yourself (ONLY if you have mana issues).

1. Rotation, Cooldowns, and Abilities for dungeons and 10-mans

In dungeons you can shield the 5 people in the party quite fast. Have in mind that you should only shield people who will take damage. If you shield all the 5 people all the time, you will go out of mana if the shields are not breaking. Before you can shield your party again (because of Weakened Soul), focus your Penance on the tank (or on people who take high damage), cast PoM most often on the tank and use Flash Heal/Renew to heal people up. If all of you are taking high damage, just spam Holy Nova and cast PoM on every cooldown. In critical situations and for fast raid-wide healing, pop DH (with Inner Focus).

In 10-mans, since with the haste cap you can shield people for 10-12 seconds (theoretically 10 seconds but with high ms/low fps it takes a bit more) and there are only 2 healers, you need to use additional spells for healing. Again if you have people shielded or the shields were absorbed and the people still have Weakened Soul, focus your Penance on the tank (or on people who take high damage), cast PoM most often on the tank and use Flash Heal/Renew to heal people up. Holy Nova is not an option for healing here because there are 2 groups. Also, Prayer of Healing should not be used by Discipline. In critical situations and for fast raid-wide healing, pop DH (with Inner Focus).

2. Rotation, Cooldowns, and Abilities for 25-mans

In 25-mans, your job in most cases will be to shield the whole raid, which will take you 25-27 seconds (theoretically 25 seconds but with high ms/low fps it takes a bit more). However, again make sure that you shield people who will take damage first and whenever your mana is getting low, try to avoid shielding the tank(s) and use multiple Raptures. Cast PoM whenever there are more people taking constant damage – preferably on the melee group/tank(s). Focus your Penance on the tank(s) (or on people who take high damage). Only as a last resort use Flash Heal in 25-mans. Shielding people is in almost all cases more important than direct heals (Flash Heal)! In specific cases you can use Holy Nova to fastly heal up your group if it is stacked (like Rotface/Festergut/LK Hc (Frostmourne phase)/Anub’arak (last phase)). In critical situations and for fast raid-wide healing, pop DH (with Inner Focus).

VI. Gearing up and Best in Slot (BiS) list

The lists I am going to provide here show you the end-game gear you have to obtain. You can easily decide which items from the lower level ones to use, based on the stat priority provided earlier. Also, there might be some choices you have to make for item combinations but in the end it is up to you – this is my suggestion. Whenever there are several options, it is always Option 1>Option 2>Option 3>…

IMPORTANT: The links to the items are from http://www.wowhead.com/items , where you can see useful comments/discussions/info. Wowhead's database has been changed for further expansions so the stats are not accurate for WotLK. If you want to see the accurate stats/tooltips for items, check them at http://wotlk.openwow.com/

1. Gearing up and Best in Slot (BiS) list for 10-mans

Note: The items suggested here have more haste and a bit less crit compared with the BiS list for 25-mans. Since the haste you get from these items is much more than your haste cap, it is up to you (and your playstyle/mana management) to balance between haste/mana regen/crit. Your rotation in dungeons and 10-mans requires you to cast spells which benefit from haste (FH/GH), so you'd need more haste than in 25-man.

From this list (for 10-mans) you get your 4-piece Tier 10 bonus from Shoulder/Chest/Hands/Legs or Head item slots. Head might be a non-tier item in end-game gear since it's easier to get than Heroic tier head.

Note: If you're feeling comfortable with your mana regen without using Solace (meaning you can use multiple Raptures, without anyone breaking your shields prematurely), you should go for Althor's Abacus and Glowing Twilight Scale as trinket options, since they provide the most Spell Power and healing.

VII. Professions and Consumables

This part will cover only primary professions as secondary ones do not influence directly PvE.

The first Primary profession I’d suggest as mandatory is Tailoring. There are two main reasons for that. Firstly, the Lightweave Embroidery enchant on back which boosts your spell power by a lot (compared to other professions), hence the strength of your shields and absorbs. Secondly, it provides you with easy access to crafted items which are really useful until you get your BiS and also, the easy-to-make leg enchant, which otherwise you have to buy for a high price in the Auction House.

Here is a list of the primary professions you can choose as a second option and their benefits for you as a Discipline priest:

- Blacksmithing provides you with two extra sockets (1 on Hands and 1 on Wrist), which can be gemmed with spell power gems, which provides you with a 46 Spell Power bonus;

- Jewelcrafting gives you the special gems which give more stats. Since you can equip a max of 3 of those special gems of any kind, if you choose them to be all spell power, that will be a 48 additional Spell Power bonus;

- Enchanting allows you to make your own enchants and to have bonus enchants on rings, which gives you a 46 Spell Power bonus;

- Inscription gives you a powerful enchant on shoulders (Master's Inscription of the Storm), which provides you with an additional 46 Spell Power bonus;

- Leatherworking gives you a wrist enchant (Fur Lining - Spell Power), which provides you with an additional 46 Spell Power bonus.

Note: Considering that out of the second primary professions list only Enchanting does not require an additional profession to be leveled up (i.e. Mining/Herbalism) and since the spell power bonus from all those professions is the same, I would suggest to you to go with Enchanting. This will help you with the rest of the enchants you’d need (look at Section IV. Gems and Enchants).

So my advice for professions will be: pick Tailoring + Enchanting, because it is the easiest and most efficient. Of course, any other combination of Tailoring and another of the above-mentioned primary professions will do. It is up to you.

VIII. Macros and Addons

This section will be relatively poor for now because I use as few addons as possible. Also, there will be only 1 macro which I will provide for Discipline (the rest is from keybinds):

#showtooltip Divine Hymn
/cast Inner Focus
/cast Divine Hymn

My addon list for PvE includes:
- DBM
- Recount (with a plug-in for Heal & Absorb, do NOT use Guessed Absorbs!)
- Grid
- Clique
- Need to Know (for monitoring cooldowns and procs)

================================================== =================

How to Download Recount Heal&Absorbs and monitor your absorbs ingame

1. Direct download link for Recount (base addon): http://www.wowace.co...0.1_release.zip
2. Direct download link for RecountGuessedAbsorbs (this mod calculates only your absorbs ingame, needed for RecountHealAndGuessedAbsorbs to work): http://russia-guild....load/0-0-0-1-20
3. Direct download link for RecountHealAndGuessedAbsorbs (this mod actually allows you to link and see Heal&Absorbs): http://www.curseforg...Absorbs-1.4.zip

Unzip the three files (or if you already have Recount, only files 2 and 3) as separate folders directly in your Addon folder. Restart your game and you should see the Heal&Absorb mod available ingame.

I have included the following additional debuffs to be tracked via Grid (right click the minimap icon of Grid, then go to Status>Auras>Add New Debuff and type in its name):

- Impaled (for Lord Marrowgar spiked targets);
- Dominate Mind (for mind-controlled players at Lady Deathwhisper);
- Boiling Blood (a DoT cast on players at Deathbringer Saurfang);
- Mark of the Fallen Champion (a DoT cast on players at Deathbringer Saurfang);
- Volatile Ooze Adhesive (the target of the green add at PP);
- Gaseous Bloat (the target of the orange add at PP);
- Unbound Plague (one of the debuffs at PP Hc);
- Essence of the Blood Queen (the so-called “bites” at BQL);
- Frost Beacon (the people you have to preshield at Sindragosa before they get tombed);
- Ice Tomb (people you have to shield as soon as they get freed);
- Unchained Magic (players with the debuff at Sindragosa);
