1735:18. Panthers Continued from Page C-1 He would have led the Berry vision last year, but Cathedral not get to play two games against Holyoke and another against Longmeadow because of forfeits. Those forfeits two Holyoke had too many misconducts and lost by Cathedral because of time mix-up cost Nolan scoring title as a freshman. He finished second -five points behind the leader and the player who beat him out got nine points a one-sided victory (22-0) over yoke. Defenseman Brian Steigmeyer of Ludlow, who left the Springfield Olympics to play for Cathedral, says the nature of the game hockey doesn't allow for a let-up.

"We can't play down to our competition," said Steigmeyer. "We work hard and play well as team." Cathedral was expected to dominate because while the rest of division is in a rebuilding cycle, the Panthers returned virtually eryone from last year's state Division II finalist. Cathedral dropped an early-season 10-7 shootout to Eastern Mass. power Malden Catholic. It also a 3-2 scrimmage against Deerfield Academy, and will scrimmage Northfield Mount Hermon and Billerica.

Cathedral's overall goal this season is to win a the state championship, something a Western Mass. team is rarely in a realistic position to do. In last year's state title game against Austin Prep, Cathedral WNEC icemen triumph Gary Grout's unassisted goal 2:43 into overtime gave visiting Western New England College a 4- 3 hockey victory over Roger Williams yesterday i in Bristol, R.I. Grout, a junior from Springfield, also opened the scoring for the 9-4 Golden Bears 4:08 into the game. Classmate Paul Evon of Chicopee later put WNEC ahead 2-1 with the first of his two goals at the 17:09 mark of the period.

After Roger Williams got even again, Evon tallied 6:14 into the second period. The home team tied the score for the final time on Pete Koquck's goal with 9:11 remaining in regulation. Sophom*ore Bob Brown of Chicopee was brilliant in goal for WNEC with 42 saves, including two in overtime. Amherst 8, Wesleyan 4 Bill McLean's second goal broke a 3-3 third-period tie and the Lord Jeffs improved to 7-6. Ed Jarosz and Dave Nishigawa also tallied twice for Amherst and goalie Brian Doyle of Springfield had an assist to go with 30 saves.

Tony Gravanis, with a goal and three assists, Dave Smith with one goal and two assists, also powered Amherst. AIC 6, Trinity 1 Defenseman Darryl Frenette's two goals powered American 'International, which led 4-0 after one period. Jeff Paoline and Eric Forselius added a goal and an assist apiece for the 10-6-1 Yellow Jackets. Trinity fell to 11-3. MEN'S SWIMMING UMass 150, Vermont 86.

Three-time defending New England champion Massachusetts remained undefeated after 10 dual meets this season. Jim Robertson captured both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles in 22.26 and 47.96 seconds respectively and teammate Steve. Myers swept the diving. WOMEN'S TRACK Tufts took the Smith College Invitational with a 94-point team score and Williams placed second at 80.5. Smith wound finished third with 69 points as Deb Ahearn was victorious in the long jump (17- and winner Meg White turned in an ECAC-qualifying time of 4:53.37.

At Boston University's Terrier Classic, Barbara Francisco of Springfield College prevailed in the shot put with a heave and qualified for the NCAA Division II nationals. Teammate Dede Theodore also qualified with a third-place effort of MEN'S GYMNASTICS Springfield recorded its first victory in three meets, 266.15- 257.1 over Army as Ramiro Mora won on the parallel bars (9.3) and still rings (9.45). Rick Hoage won the floor exercise with a 9.1 and SC teammate Eduardo Ovalle posted a meet-best 9.55 on the high bar. WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS A sweep by vaulters Tara Brady (9.2), Maria Targgio (8.95) and Patty Izzi (8.9) 1 lifted 2-1 Springfield past Cortland State, 167.15 to 161.7.
