Springfield, August 11-(US) -A thirteen-year-old boy, whose only excuse for slaying his fourteen-year-old "pal" was that the latter "squealed" on him, was arraigned today before Justice of the Peace William B. Chittenden and his preliminary hearing set for tomorrow.

The defendant is Atares, of Chicago. The only explanation he could give for shooting his friend, Ray Wylder, to death at 'Auburn, last Friday, aside from the fact. that Ray had told of burglaries the boys had committed, was that: "It' seemed like the devil guided me." Justice Chittenden asked him: "Do you realize that this is a murder charge?" Billy replied: "Yes, I' guess I do. I'm sorry, but it's too late now." FLUID MILK SALES LIGHT. New York, August 7-(AP) -Cotton was generally higher today on trade buying and covering promoted by relatively steady cables and reports of continued unfavorable weather in the Southwest. December deliveries, after selling up to 13.35c during the early trading, reacted to 13.26c under realizing or liquidation, but stiffened up again and closed at 13.33c, with the general market closing steady at net advances of 10 to 16 points. Early afternoon reactions in the grain and stock markets seemed to increase the tendency to take profits on long cotton, but the volume of business tapered off on the setback and after selling down to 13.14c for October and 13.51c for May, or about 7 to 9 points from the early highs, prices firmed up and closing quotations were within a point or two of the best for the day on active months.

Another of the private end-July crop reports was issued, which placed the indicated yield at 9,183,000 bales, or within a range of recent figures. Including this report, the average of eight private endJuly crop figures is 9,223,000 bales, or a shade below the average expectation of New York Cotton Exchange members 88 indicated by last week's canvass. Much of the day's business was attributed to further evening-up for tomorrow's Government crop report. Exports today 4,236, making 52,883 80 far this season. Port receipts 9,032.
