What to Know

Critics Consensus

Road House updates a cult classic for a new generation, happily replicating the original's emphasis on cheesy brawn over narrative brains.

Audience Says

Road House can sometimes be so bad it's good, but more often, the uneven acting and ridiculous story are just disappointing.

Road House | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Rafer Guzman Newsday The gonzo magic of the 1989 original is gone, but there’s enough bone-breaking action here to satisfy B-movie aficionados. Rated: 3/4 Apr 8, 2024 Full Review Road House | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Philip De Semlyen Time Out The combination of Gyllenhaal’s easy charm, some Florida sunshine and at least one fight scene for the ages make this Road House worth stopping by. Just try to grab a seat in a quiet corner. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Road House | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) More dynamic and less strange than the original, this remake is a hell of a good time as long as you don’t think too hard about any of it. But it probably won’t reach cult status, it’s neither excellent nor terrible enough for that. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Road House | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Nestor Bentancor Nestor Cine Desde Hollywood Enter a whirlwind of testosterone-driven fun that serves up pleasure without -excessively- guilty hangovers. May 29, 2024 Full Review Road House | Rotten Tomatoes (6) James Marsh South China Morning Post Gone is the throat-ripping and the simmering hom*oeroticism that pulsated throughout the original, replaced by a competent if uninspired combination of mixed martial arts and conventional bar brawling. Brian C I was pleasantly surprised by this film. Remakes of classics, like “Road House,” often face a steep uphill battle. But the plot, cast, and flow of the movie offered a fresh take on a cult-classic. The bar scene with the band continuing to play and the old man shaking the shakers, all while the building is nearly torn apart, is worth watching in and of itself. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Jonathan J Thank you so much for making this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the humor, fights, and story-line. It is a movie for the average Joe. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Alan K Truly disgusted with myself for wasting 2 hours of my life on this movie. Other than a showcase for Jake Gyllenhaal's abs, WTF was this? I mean, if you're going to remake a bad movie, it should at least be better than the original. Complete 💩. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Danny H The comparisons with the original are somewhat unfair. The original was a little known, B-movie, that people remember far to fondly, thanks to Swayze's passing. The reality is, this movie is probably a little better than the original. It's not without it's fault. At times it derives from the original a little too directly and would have been better served to take it's own path. What I do agree with is the wrestler actor is ridiculous and over the top and hopefully he'll never make it into another movie. It's still a b-movie, but not a bad time passer, that is being judged a little unfairly. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/15/24 Full Review Paul B Action scenes are good, McGregor is poor in his first movie role. Not connected to the original and no where near as good. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/14/24 Full Review james r Very disappointing remake of the original Roadhouse. Seriously no connection whatsoever except for The Roadhouse bar itself. Jake G. is better than this. Conner M. Not his best acting debut Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
