thousands of acres of california on fire. tonight. we are tracking multiple active fires from northern to southern california. one of the most challenging fire fights going on in the north bay, where there's a recent and tragic history of

11:01 pm

devastating wildfires. the point fire in sonoma county broke out just this afternoon, growing to more than 1000 acres over the last few hours. standing at just 15% contained, cal fire says structures have been destroyed and evacuation orders are in place, so are evacuation warnings. a spare the air alert now in effect for a growing part of the bay area. nbc bay area's thom jensen live in healdsburg, where many are evacuated as strong winds pushed the flames towards more populated areas. tom terry. yeah, a lot of people evacuating two healdsburg here, filling up some of the hotels. i just talked to a guy in the parking lot here in the safeway parking lot who came up to us and was asking us if the fire was moving towards healdsburg. healdsburg where he lives. and he was concerned because of that history here in the north bay with these fires moving into populated areas. so fast in the night with the night winds and you can't really see the winds right here where we are, but

11:02 pm

they're a lot heavier, closer to where the fire is. and this fire did grow quickly. we started tracking just after 1230, about 100 acres, then 500 acres. and now tonight more than a thousand acres. and they're trying to stop this before it really does burn out of control. once again here in the north bay. hundreds of firefighters from across the region are now attacking the point fire outside healdsburg, some from the air, and a lot more from the ground. hopefully with all of our resources that we have right now, air and ground, hopefully we're able to contain this fire sooner rather than later. engine crews are working around houses in the evacuation zones and have saved hundreds of structures already. but the point fire claimed two homes and many more are still threatened. the operator of a horse riding ranch above lake sonoma called off planned rides today when the fire started just after 1230 in the afternoon. she's hoping it continues to

11:03 pm

move away from her property. as it stands, we're not in the evacuation zone because the fire's going the opposite direction, but, if they do evacuate us, then we'll be ready to go tonight. she's concerned about friends and neighbors in the dry creek area under evacuation orders, but staying home despite the warnings, at least for now. some are doing their own work to protect their homes. they're just waiting and they're watching their farmers, you know? yeah a lot of ranches down there, a lot of ranches and farmers, cal fire hopes everyone evacuates in those mandatory zones because the wind and terrain make the fire unpredictable. and the steep hillsides are covered in manzanita, madrone and oak trees. those are highly combustible plant species. and here in healdsburg, well outside the evacuation zones, everyone is paying close attention to what's happening. knowing entire neighborhoods here could be ordered to evacuate. if this fire blows up tonight, they'd been through this before. it's still pretty far away from most things, so we're hoping. but i

11:04 pm

mean, i have stuff that i still have packed from the last fires. yeah, they've got us almost trained with it. i don't know if you can hear right now. that's a truck noise coming right now. but we've heard the helicopters a lot tonight. and this firefight from the air even tonight, not just the ground into the night is being fought. cal fire ordered three night capable fire helicopters on this fire on the point fire. so they are attacking it tonight from the air, trying to keep it, at bay before it does blow out of control, especially in these difficult conditions. terry. tom, let me ask you. you talked about the winds, the evacuees we're seeing. the winds are so much stronger, closer to the fire. but where you are there in healdsburg, how bad is the smoke? can you really get a strong sense of that? you know, i can. i can feel it. my lungs. i can feel it in my contact lenses. my eyes are burning, but it is a lot heavier and the

11:05 pm

winds are carrying it that way. a more towards rohnert park and santa rosa and that area. and you can see that as we were coming in those areas, even coming up the highway, if you didn't have the settings right on your car, if you were bringing the air from the outside in, you're bringing smoke and quickly, in my new car, i was trying to find the recirculate inside. so those areas are heavy in smoke and, people are concerned about that tonight. as far as health conditions and the fire possibly moving in those directions because the wind is blowing that way, and, you know, those areas have been run over by fire before. terry. absolutely. tom. good advice on the vent control in your vehicle. thanks very much for the update from up there. and as tom was talking about cal fire is fighting the point. fire from the air and on the ground. this is video of the sonoma air attack base at the sonoma county airport in santa rosa, throughout the evening, several different aircraft have been seen fueling up, taking off to attack the flames and tom was talking about it. three night capable helicopters is a red

11:06 pm

flag warning, in effect, not exactly what firefighters don't want to hear on the ground or in the air. let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda with the details on that. rob. well, terry, right now we're looking at a window of opportunity for those fire crews, especially the night equipped air crews that are looking at a fire right now with temperatures in the 50s and humidity levels that actually have gone up, closer to 49% still got those. northwest winds up to 22mph. but from now to about 5 a.m, these will be the coolest temperatures and the highest humidity levels. but for the wind likely increases again as we head towards tomorrow morning. now, the current state of the point fire making a run around bradford mountain, approaching mountain view ranch road for a time today that was due to the west northwest wind pushing that fire. and as tom mentioned, a lot of the smoke down to the south and east through healdsburg and down towards santa rosa. now, with the air pollution issues ongoing, spare the air alerts issued for the next two days. this is for the north bay and

11:07 pm

the interior east bay out towards solano county and contra costa counties. these are the locations you can see, as tom mentioned in red down through santa rosa, kenwood into napa, and the wind direction as we head towards tomorrow morning, will likely take that smoke across the east bay. but watch what happens at 9 a.m. smoke starts to drop south down through marin county, coinciding with a wind shift. and this is a concern as we head towards tomorrow. as those winds begin to change, lowering humidity levels after 5 a.m. tomorrow morning as the north winds develop, look at those humidity levels. it's like mid-afternoon at 9 a.m. across those north bay hills and those dry conditions continue into the afternoon. the peak of this red flag warning late morning to mid-afternoon tomorrow. humidity levels, widespread areas in the north bay hills and the inland east bay below 20. those areas under the red flag warning through the day on monday, red flag warning now extended to tuesday morning out towards solano county. we'll have a closer look at the wind

11:09 pm

lanes on interstate five as a precaution. the northbound lanes still open tonight. southbound traffic being diverted onto 138 or the 14 freeway in sacramento tonight. evacuation orders are in effect for the excelsior fire started around four this afternoon on jackson road, south of mather. it's burned nearly 900 acres and there is no containment on that fire. back at home in the south bay, fire crews quickly put out a vegetation fire in san jose. this one started about three this afternoon near 101 at oakland road. burned about four acres before it was knocked down. no word on how that one started. well, new at 11. shocking new video out of san jose. and tonight police are looking for the people responsible for attacking a patrol car during a sideshow near santana row. an officer in that car. at the time of the attack, one onlooker and an officer were injured. here's nbc bay area's alyssa goard with the disturbing video and reaction from the department. shocking

the car, but also those egging them on, acting san jose police chief paul joseph says he will work with the district attorney to ensure that once arrested, these suspects are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. people who work at the restaurants nearby here say the sideshow happened during peak dinner hours, so all their customers saw it and they say this intersection here at oakland and winchester was packed with bystanders watching it happen. so i just came outside and i and then like hella smoke, like hella people just everywhere. and then just like people drifting their cars, people in the shopping center said it was shocking for them to see this happen in daylight, when many families and pedestrians are usually around. it's really unfortunate and frustrating, for somebody like myself who likes to walk a lot and not feel comfortable, knowing that these kind of things are starting to happen, even during the day. if you have any video or information about this sideshow, san jose police want you to contact them in san jose. alyssa goard, nbc, bay

this afternoon in the north bay. it is called the point fire. it's in sonoma county. it's grown to more than 1000 acres. the fear is the wind will cause it to rapidly gain ground. tonight, hundreds of firefighters are on the fire line working to make sure that doesn't happen. cal fire says two homes have been destroyed so far. the evacuation orders are in place in nearby healdsburg. people are ready to pack up if the evacuation area expands. we were here for the other evacuations. we've evacuated twice, don't love it. it's kind of like a ptsd moment, but it's also pretty far away. and our fire crews are pretty awesome. yeah, there they are, in action. the point fire, currently listed as 15% contained. let's bring in rob for a quick update. how are those winds and air quality looking tonight? rob yeah, right now we're watching the wind closely. more favorable conditions right now along the fire where earlier today strong winds pushed this fire down away from the southeast side of lake sonoma, down towards bradford mountain. but the wind speeds

have backed off a little bit. temperatures have cooled, and the humidity levels have come up between now and probably about 5 a.m. this is about as good as it's going to get in terms of humidity and those cooler temperatures. moving forward, we'll begin to see more impacts as those north winds develop and drier conditions head into tomorrow. next two days spare the air alert due to smoke from the point. fire you've been noticing this throughout sonoma county, napa county and to the east bay as well. the short term outlook continues to bring more of that smoke across those same areas. but watch what happens by 9 a.m. tomorrow. now the smoke is moving southward. around the same time, the change in wind direction occurs. it will be right around after sunrise to 9 a.m. could bring some smoke for a time into marin county, then back with the west northwest winds heading into the afternoon. but the driver of the fire danger is the wind, and look what it does to the humidity by mid-morning. really dropping off across those north bay hills and by mid-afternoon dropping off even more, leading us to the red flag warning up through the day on monday, portions of sonoma county, lake

49. not too bad. right now we obviously don't have a lot of north wind yet around the region. so 53% humidity in dublin at 62 degrees and into san jose also in the low 60. currently with that northwest wind at ten miles per hour. so tomorrow morning we start off in the 50s. however if you have those north winds around the north bay hills could be waking up to the mid 60s tomorrow morning and you'll see hour by hour, our temperatures climbing through the 70s and some 80s inland tomorrow. so the fire danger story really isn't about heat. it's the dry north wind and those lowering humidity levels. san francisco tomorrow near 71 degrees 78, in oakland and san jose, mid 80s inland across the tri valley. red flag warnings up for the north bay hills, sonoma county, lake county over to eastern napa county, and all of solano county. 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on monday. and what we'll also have to deal with is the smoke pollution. you may notice this, especially tomorrow morning as more the smoke starts to move south out of the north bay. and

here's how things should go in terms of the smoke pollution. by the morning, as the north wind picks up for a time, may drop into marin county and san francisco as the winds make that north turn right around mid-morning and then towards the afternoon, the smoke probably starts to head back in the same direction it was today. as west northwest winds start to kick in towards the evening. now for the rest of the bay area. peak winds should be around the mid afternoon hours along with temperatures in the 70s and 80s, so we've got the low humidity, gusty conditions and a bit of that north wind which is likely the peak of fire danger in this episode, including the red flag warnings that will be active tomorrow. notice the impact of that north wind as early as 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. tomorrow. things starting to dry out in the north bay hills, out towards the diablo range and hitting their driest levels mid afternoon to early evening as the north wind switches back, eventually to a sea breeze which will lead to a bit of a cooldown right there in the midweek forecast. you see at the bottom of the screen, though , the second half of the week is
