An AC unit puts a load on the engine and if the engine has problems, like faulty radiator or water pump, or low compression, that can cause the overheat condition. Overheating can also be due to an AC unit that has a bad compressor or a failing condenser or fan. There's a lot to check out to find the cause and it might be best to have an AC tech do this.

Cooling fan failures are the most common, they should turn on when the AC is selected. If they don’t then you need to have them checked out to find out why.
